‘OHANA DAY – THIS SUNDAY, AT THE BEAUTIFUL BAILEY HOUSE MUSEUM
Isn’t our community blessed to have the Bailey House Museum as a hub of local history? Beyond providing a resource for the bygone-giddy, the locale—vibrant green grounds contrasted against the white mortar of the missionary-era house, alive in the sun and pocketed with deep shade—is a pleasure. This Sunday is the perfect opportunity for your ‘ohana to enjoy the museum, as staffers and the Maui Historical Society host their very first ‘Ohana Day festivities. To provide “a unique cultural experience,” says the museum’s executive director Nicole McMullen, the event will feature a special poi pounding demonstration. PAST PERFECT
Earlier this month, the Maui Historical Society/Bailey House Museum received a $10,000 “organizational capacity building program grant,” from the Hawaii Community Foundation. Combined with donations from the Rotary Club of Maui and former trustee Zadoc Brown, Jr., the Maui Historical Society will purchaes a new computer and PastPerfect museum software.
“Digitizing the collections using this museum software will significantly increase Maui Historical Society’s ability to serve the public. This technology upgrade will improve the research capacity of the Society by centralizing records, improving efficiency, and making document, photograph and artifact collections easier to search and more accessible.
The Archival Resource Center at the Bailey House preserves and makes available for research a library of published materials and an archive, which include(s) maps, manuscripts, genealogies, biographies, and the documents of various organizations and businesses, as well as a photo collection of over 8,000 historic Maui photographs. Research hours are by appointment Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.” reads the Bailey House press release.

For any visit to the Bailey House, be sure to pick up a Plant Guide. It’s a 13-stop tour of their beautiful grounds pointing out some special native, endemic, and indigenous plants that grow on the property.
Neat ones include the (2) Aali’i, a “rugged shrub with winged seed pods in a variety of colors,” the air plant (4) Moa, an “ancient plant that probably arrived on the wind and has no leaves or roots,” the (11) Olena, which “produces a deep yellow-gold dye made from its roots,” and the (10) Ma’o, brown cotton that by crossbreeding, saved the mainland cotton industry from bugs wreaking havoc.
