The West side took its lumps this week when the County announced it won’t close Front Street for Halloween. But not every event is floundering. Lahaina Plantation Days kicks off its second year (meaning it can now accurately be called “annual”) with an array of diversions, including food booths featuring the grinds of Star Noodle, Aloha Mixed Plate, Sansei, RB Steak House, Hula Grill and Cool Cat Cafe to name a few, plus a beer and wine garden, historical displays, a farmers’ market, horse rides and a fun zone for the keiki and entertainment from the likes of Amy Hanaiali’i Gilliom, Na Palapalai, An Den and more. Also, you’ll have a chance to both check out and contribute to the restoration of the iconic Pioneer Mill smokestack, by buying a commemorative brick. Keep it local and extra-island stylee, the Hula Grill has just re-organized it’s music line-up to include mo’ bettah local music.  As always, Hula Grill will be serving up those tasty local grinds from inside an open-air plantation style house, located on Kaanapali Beach.  If your trying to impress your Kane or Wahine remember to arrive before nightfall to catch beautiful views of neighboring islands Lanai and Molokai at sunset.

Also, Hula Grill will be offering specially priced cocktails during their “Aloha Hour” 3-5pm daily.

This year’s Turkey Trot for Fun was another repeat success, as runners from around the island  and world challenged themselves to accurately guess their race times.  113 registered runners sprinted off the starting line early Thanksgiving morning, and over $1000 was raised to benefit Maui’s Food Bank.  In addition to entry fees, 254lbs of canned goods was collected for the Foodbank.  Race organizer Cathy Fitzpatrick (Valley Isle Road Runners) was overjoyed at response from race participants and funds raised for Maui’s Foodbank.

If your interested in getting more involved with Valley Isle Road Runners, be advised that VIRR’s executive board elections will take place on 12/12/2009 after the annual “Christmas 5k & 10K Race”

According to the press release from Becker Communications, “[c]ontestants were judged on ukulele performance (including strumming, rhythm, and picking), singing and stage presence, originality, their brief introduction, off stage attitude (I like that aspect the best!), and keeping within the time limit.”

Additionally, it’s important to mention that, “[t]he contest was made possible thanks to the support of several generous sponsors including Maui Jim Sunglasses, Leilanis on the Beach, Kimo’s, Ulalena, Aloha Mixed Plate, Outback Steakhouse, Maui Ocean Center, Maui Golf and Sports Park, and Roy’s Bar and Grill.”
