Dude, hang in there. Daylight Savings is on Nov. 6. You know what that means: Hawaii’s 7am Sunday kickoff time will spring forward to the slightly less-ungodly hour of 8am; never mind we won’t have to wait an hour for beer/Bloody Mary service. Until then, revel in the sane hours of Monday Night (that is, um, afternoon) Football. If you couldn’t afford the NFL Sunday Ticket (who can?), no worries beef curries. Football-friendly watering holes abound, including Green Leaf Sports Bar & Grill (1088 L. Main St., Wailuku), Kahului Ale House (355 E. Kamehameha Ave., Kahului), Oceans Bar & Grill (1819 S. Kihei Rd.), Haui’s Life’s A Beach (1913 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei), Mulligan’s on the Blue (100 Kaukahi St., Wailea), Stopwatch Sports Bar (1127 Makawao Ave.) and Charley’s Restaurant & Saloon (142 Hana Hwy., Paia).

Who is The Goddess Alchemy Project? “Bringing forth a timeless science through a live, lyrical experience of “more than one sista on the mic at a time”… this crew gives voice to the potent sound of Goddess Alchemy rising from underground urban-scapes to mainstream airwaves. In collaboration with many artists and producers, this unique sound provides a fresh flavor by integrating elements of underground hip-hop, world accents, spoken word flows, and soulful melodics. Combine this with ancient texts, quantum physics, ancestral roots, multi-dimensional symbology, and an all-female cypher… the result to this equation is a new, musical science they call “Open Source Soul Floetics.”" (via goddessalchemyproject.com/biography)

Also features Honolulu’s Kings of Spade and Maui’s own Gomega.
Theater-loving Mauians are spoilt for choice this summer. If the artsy Market St. scene is your thing, head to Gallerie Ha for a special performance of WARGATE. Sponsored by the Maui Live Poets Society (MLPS), poet/actor Wide Garcia will perform his original–and satirical–two-act monologue recreating World War II nostalgia. Guests are invited to share their own original art, music or spoken word with a WWII theme, dress up for the ’40s costume contest, and boogie to big band beats [Fri (July 16), 7pm, donations to MLPS accepted, 51 N. Market St., Wailuku, 244-3993, gallerieha.com]. Also on Market St., at the historic ‘Iao Theater, Maui OnStage presents their second weekend of The Wedding Singer, the musical. Featured in last week’s Arts & Entertainment, it’s a spunky stage rendition of the rom com flick made popular by Drew Barrymore, and friend of the paper, Adam Sandler [Fri & Sat , 7:30pm, $40/$20 and Sun, 3pm, (through Aug 1), $15, 68 N. Market St., Wailuku, 242-6969, mauionstage.com]. Wedding Singer may be the last of the ‘Iao’s ’09-’10 season, but more is in store. Maui OnStage has announced an open audition for Arsenic and Old Lace, the show slated to kick off the new season, in October. Interested? Call to make an appointment, prepare a comedic monologue, bring along a current headshot and resume, and be ready cold-read the script [Wed (July 21), 6-9pm, 68 N. Market St., Wailuku, 242-8680] (more…)

Meanwhile, South Pacific celebrates its finale weekend. The Maui Academy of Performing Arts presents this Rodgers & Hammerstein classic at the Maui Tropical Plantation, under a ceiling of stars. Bring blankets or low chairs for lawn seating, and come hungry–Bruddah Willy’s Sticky Ribs and a full bar available before showtime [Thurs, Fri & Sat (July 15-17), 7:30pm, $18-$25, 1670 Honoapiilani Hwy., Waikapu; 244-8760, mauiacademy.org] On the West side, Theater Theater Maui presents Follow That Rabbit, an updated version of Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland. It’s the summer-long culmination of 42 hardworking keiki, who’ve studied the art of acting under director Kristi Scott [Fri, 10am & 7pm, Sat 7pm, Sun 3pm (July 16-18), $10 adults / $5 keiki, Westin Maui Restort & Spa, Ka'anapali, 808-661-1168]. Too, at the Hyatt’s Maui Moon Theater, are the colorful acrobatics of Cirque Polynesia–a show which offers year-round kama’aina specials and deals for keiki [Mon - Saturday, 6pm, 200 Nohea Kai Dr., Ka'anapali, 667-4540]. And if you simply can’t get enough funny, there’s plenty of comedy to be had. The island improv of The Comedy Hui features fast-paced games, musical numbers and a slew of wacky characters [Fri (July 16), 7pm, $22 adult / $11 keiki, McCoy Studio Theater, MACC, 242-7469, www.mauiarts.org]. Plus, check out this week’s Arts & Entertainment for the nitty gritty on the Tin Can Comedy‘s championships, where not only can you win cash, and a chance to open for Augie T in September, but the pupus are free and the beer is cheap [every Tues through Aug 31, 9pm, Mulligan's on the Blue, Wailea, 874-1131].

Don’t forget the advantages of being marooned on a pretty little rock in the middle of the pacific. It’s February, and while elsewhere mothers are busy wrenching the x-box controller out of their teenage son’s hands to get him to help shovel the drive, here ate home it is time to enjoy a little “Jazz on the Blue” outdoors at Mulligans on Saturday, February 27th starting at 7PM. Treat yourself to a peaceful night in Wailea, listening to some of the islands best jazz musicians, including Toby Couture on vocal and keyboards, Shiro Mori on guitar, Paul Marchetti on drums, and Doug White on bass. This show is to be accompanied by an “eat-as-you-please” buffet ($29.95)- Yes, they are trying to say all-you-can eat while sounding high-class. While I might take issue with the buffet name, don’t let me deter you, the offerings themselves are mouthwatering, especially for seafood fanatics. Start off with New England Style Chowder with Clams, Mahimahi, Rock Shrimp and Crab. For the main course, taste the Roast Prime Rib Au Jus and Seafood Lasagne. And please refrain from stuffing the Mini Bailey’s Chocolate Mousse Tarts and Flourless Chocolate Tortes with a raspberry coulis into your purse to later be guility devoured while curled up in bed; that would be the kind of thing someone might do at an all-you-can eat buffet, but god forbid one should be so crass at an eat-as-you-please buffet. Reservations Recommended. Call 874-1131. By: Sierra Brown

A Bottle And Friend/ By: Robert Burns

There’s nane that’s blest of human kind

But the cheerful and the gay, man

Fal,la,la,&c

Here’s a bottle and an honest friend!

What wad ye wish for mair, man?

Wha kens, before his life may end,

What his share may be o’ care, man?

Then catch the moments as they fly

And use them as ye ought, man:

Belive me, happiness is shy,

And comes no aye when sought, man.

The last time I went to Mulligan’s, a drunk tourist bought me and half of the other women in the pub flower leis, then later passed out spread-eagle on the front lawn… definitely a hilarious way to shake things up. Also, if you’re under 21 you can still get in. Mulligan’s has some different entertainment up this month… reggae is great, but everyone needs to mix things up once in a while. Come check out some of the awesome Scottish/Celtic music Mulligan’s is offering up. One event to clear your calendar for is the Robert Burns Celebration on January 25th… The Finn McCoul Band, Bagpiper Roger McKinley, and Scottish MC John Crow will all be performing. Also… there will be a Scottish Hawaiian Buffet. Definitely a strange mix of cuisines, but also delicious. If you go to see the Celtic Tigers, check out the lead singer/guitarist… He looks eerily like Charlie Harper. By: Sierra Brown
