Alika Nako’oka

Everybody loves Alika. Born on the island of Maui, he hails from a musical pedigree that includes popular Hawaiian entertainers like his father, Alika Nako’oka Sr., and his uncles, Willie “Smiley” Nako’oka and Jesse Nako’oka (who’s famous for his long-running lu’au show at the Maui Lu, as well as a string of hits including “54 Bridges to Hana Town”). Alika began singing at an early age, performing throughout the Hawaiian Islands and Pacific Northwest, and later in his career toured Los Angeles, Seattle and Las Vegas. Theater-loving Mauians are spoilt for choice this summer. If the artsy Market St. scene is your thing, head to Gallerie Ha for a special performance of WARGATE. Sponsored by the Maui Live Poets Society (MLPS), poet/actor Wide Garcia will perform his original–and satirical–two-act monologue recreating World War II nostalgia. Meanwhile, South Pacific celebrates its finale weekend. The Maui Academy of Performing Arts presents this Rodgers & Hammerstein classic at the Maui Tropical Plantation, under a ceiling of stars. Bring blankets or low chairs for lawn seating, and come hungry–Bruddah Willy’s Sticky Ribs and a full bar available before showtime [Thurs, Fri & Sat (July 15-17), 7:30pm, $18-$25, 1670 Honoapiilani Hwy., Waikapu; 244-8760, mauiacademy.org] On the West side, Theater Theater Maui presents Follow That Rabbit, an updated version of Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland. The last time I went to Mulligan’s, a drunk tourist bought me and half of the other women in the pub flower leis, then later passed out spread-eagle on the front lawn… definitely a hilarious way to shake things up.  Also, if you’re under 21 you can still get in.  Mulligan’s has some different entertainment up this month… reggae is great, but everyone needs to mix things up once in a while. Come check out some of the awesome Scottish/Celtic music Mulligan’s is offering up.  One event to clear your calendar for is the Robert Burns Celebration on January 25th… The Finn McCoul Band, Bagpiper Roger McKinley, and Scottish MC John Crow will all be performing. Also… there will be a Scottish Hawaiian Buffet. Definitely a strange mix of cuisines, but also delicious. If you go to see the Celtic Tigers, check out the lead singer/guitarist… He looks eerily like Charlie Harper. By: Sierra Brown
