If it seems like there are more beach cleanups than ever, it’s probably because there’s more beach garbage than ever. But The Butterfly Effect, presented by Surfrider’s Maui chapter, is so much more than a beach cleanup. It’s a whole day of stand-up paddle boarding, an all-woman three-mile paddling non-competition, a fashion show and then an after-party at Charley’s with DJ Jay P. and Boomshot (registration is on May 17, 5-7pm, at Flatbread Pizza in Paia). $35 entry fee; $13 cover for after-party, $5 for participants. 8am check-in. Paia Bay Coffee Co. (behind Puka Puka in Paia); betheeffect.com

Fri. & Sat., Apr. 13-14 – Dear readers, time-travel with me: it’s far into the future and you’re lying on your deathbed. You’ve got a fake hip and your synovial joints make crunchy sounds like boots on snow. Hey, it’s the winter of your life, after all. Sure, every breath makes your body shudder in agony–but you sure as hell ain’t thinking, “Damn, I really wish I didn’t do so much booty shaking and fist pumping at that Kings of Spade and Freeradicals Projekt concert.” Nope, you’re calling the nurse to refill your morphine drip and bring you another pudding, thinking of how it was all totally worth it… $15 advance. 9pm doors /10:15pm show (both venues). The good news is that the kiddies at the Paia Youth & Cultural Center are too young to remember Michael Jordan and the Looney Toons in Space Jam (1996).
PAINT PAIA TOWN RED THIS BLACK/FOURTH FRIDAY

***

FRI., NOV. 25 – With tryptophan still flowing mightily in your veins, why roust yourself awake in the wedge of dawn’s crack to shop at big boxes on Black Friday? It’s inhuman, I tell you. Sleep late instead and take shopping to the extreme in the evening at Paia Fourth Friday. More than holiday savings, local shops offer free refreshments, treats, treatments and entertainment. 6-9pm/ Paia Town. paiamaui.com / facebook.com/paiatown

WE’RE NOT SURE WHY Easter got the bunny as it’s representative, when it’d be a better-suited model for the hubbub of Jesus’ birth vs. death day. Because with so many holiday stops to hop between–seeing as there’s such long lists to make and check twice–hippety hoppers might better inspire shoppers than, say, a fat guy in a furry suit. But we digress. Anyway, be like a bunny at Paia Fourth Friday and jump around the myriad mini parties throughout town. Here’s your shop-by-shop scoops:

Agua De Flora (161 B Hana Hwy.; 579-3339) offers 5 percent off some oils and RueBelle jewelry, and Bobby Joe performs celtic harp music (6-9pm).

Biasa Rose (104 Hana Hwy., 579-8602) dishes refreshments, features a trunk show of made-on-Maui jewelry by Jasmine Honey Designs (continues Sat.), and shoppers can save a whopping 25 percent off jewelry by bringing in at least three canned goods for the Maui Food Bank. Plus, fresh flowers will be sold with proceeds benefitting the Maui Humane Society.

Dude, hang in there. Daylight Savings is on Nov. 6. You know what that means: Hawaii’s 7am Sunday kickoff time will spring forward to the slightly less-ungodly hour of 8am; never mind we won’t have to wait an hour for beer/Bloody Mary service. Until then, revel in the sane hours of Monday Night (that is, um, afternoon) Football. If you couldn’t afford the NFL Sunday Ticket (who can?), no worries beef curries. Football-friendly watering holes abound, including Green Leaf Sports Bar & Grill (1088 L. Main St., Wailuku), Kahului Ale House (355 E. Kamehameha Ave., Kahului), Oceans Bar & Grill (1819 S. Kihei Rd.), Haui’s Life’s A Beach (1913 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei), Mulligan’s on the Blue (100 Kaukahi St., Wailea), Stopwatch Sports Bar (1127 Makawao Ave.) and Charley’s Restaurant & Saloon (142 Hana Hwy., Paia).

I’ve got a friend who looks for every possible exit, everywhere we go. Why? “You can never be too ready for a zombie outbreak.” At first, this seems absurd. But we all weigh ourselves down, every day, with problems that might not ever happen (zombie enthusiasts, I’m not saying the zombie apocalypse isn’t upon us, but a girl’s gotta make an analogy). Taking us out of our everyday panic is Moonalice, the merry music-making band of hippies that brought you the Twittercast concert. In the face of an ad interim apocalypse, here’s a band with “no label, no manager, no publicist and no problems.” If that isn’t enough of a glimpse into these minstrels’ music, consider their songs, “Kick It Open,” “It’s 4:20 Somewhere” and “I’m Glad You Think So,” all free for download on their Web site, moonalice.com. And hey, if you don’t like it, the world is ending soon anyway—and my friend will be all too happy to show you the nearest exit.
Paia is a magnet for yoga, health food, bare-feet, acoustic guitars, and brazilian bikinis. Since there are so many environmentally-conscious people hanging around Paia town and its beaches all day anyway, this is a great chance for them to come together and wield their collective activist might to the tune of The Eazy, who will play during the afternoon. Anthony Simmons describes his goal for the fair, which is “to make environmental sustainability a part of everyone’s dialouge,” and “to make sure we respect the ‘Aina, the culture and the many ways the Hawaiians lived sustainably.” He will talk about the Ahupua’a and how the Hawaiian people lived in sustainable communities for hundreds of years; Micheal Howden will discuss permaculture. A giant solar dehydrator and electric motorcycle with a solar charger will be on display. You can also learn about red worm composting (if that’s your kind of thing.) Upcountry Sustainability, Onipa’a Sustainability and Compassion Center, Pacific Power Sails, Ko’ie Fishpond, SLIM, and other organizations will give presentations and host informational and interactive booths to spread the word about their sustainable goals and projects. The Hawaiian Heritage and Environmental Sustainability Fair will be hosted at Paia Gardes, which is near Paia Bay, behind Thai Island Cusine. The fair will be April 17th, from noon to sunset. This fair is to be held about every three months, so even if you can’t make it, keep your eyes open for the next announcement.

If you’d like to hear more about the organizations that will be featured at the fair, check out this MAUIGANIC BLOG, where you can find plenty of info on these local do-gooders.

A potluck picnic lunch in Spreckelsville sure sounds nice, huh? More than the makings for a swell Saturday, it’s the starts of the Sierra Club’s annual meeting. Add to the fellowship a noontime panel discussion themed “Sharing the Water,” and a feel-good awards ceremony for three of Maui’s do-gooders, and you’re afternoon is set. “[T]o express the gratitude of the community for the contributions made by those who work tirelessly to protect the natural and cultural treasures of Maui,” the club’s 2010 ‘Onipa’a Awards (meaning “to remain steadfast,” and as an aside, the personal motto of Queen Liliuokalani) will be presented to both beloved Kula crackerjack, Professor Dick Mayer (whose helpful history is too thick to squeeze into synopsis; and as another aside, was, like, totally my neighbor growing up… big ups, Upcountry!), as well as to Kaupo farmer, noted Wailuku revitalize-r, and Maui Planning Commission chair, Jonathan Starr. Additionally, the Malama ‘Aina award will be presented to Hawaiian cultural educator, Lei’ohu Ryder. [Saturday (January 30), Kaunoa Senior Center, 11am – 3pm, Free]

Though if the panel topic of “sharing water,” makes you think of cooties, don’t think too hard about the Maui Wastewater Community Work Group (CWG) meeting, slated for next week Thursday (February 4). Actually, no—think a lot about it. And say something about it too! Gathering you’re input is their objective, and the 21-member group (convening for the fourth time since their formation in October 2009) invites you to attend from 1:30 – 4:30 at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center in Wailuku. Call the Department of Environmental Management at 270-8230, or visit www.mauicounty.gov for more information.
