PSYCHEDELIC BLACK FRIDAY WITH MOTHxp AND SPECIAL GUESTS, ARC – Fri, Nov. 25. With their all-original, all-live tunes (no loops, yo!) pair with nonpareil performance art, it’s by now well known that MOTHxp’s full-sensory shows are a trip (i.e. it’s like audible psilocybin with eye candy to boot). So for this big show, they’re taking that metaphor to a literal extreme with a psychedelic theme; which, in all practicality,  means you should make sure that mustard stain’s damn-well Oxy Cleaned-out, or you’ll look gross when grooving under black lights. (PS: It’s Maui music maven Trish “The Dish” Smith’s birthday, which means the universe’s bursting with ever more goodness and light. She’s celebrating with MOTHxp, and so should you.) $7 cover. 10pm. “My hope and dream is to, through modern day theatrical skills and the power of black light body painting, present a deeper understanding of the Hawaiian culture,” writes Rachel Deboer, whose body art is as inspired as it is prolific. “[T]o not just the local community, but also capture even a glimpse or small essence of its power and beauty for the visitor to take away with them, beyond what has been offered before.”

Deboer has delved deep, conducting “extensive research from many different sources, written and personal, from the Hawaiian culture,” to create this theatrical dance show.

Mythologically inspired, it explores the idea between a “possible relationship one ancient Hawaiian carver, or kahuna kalai, has with the four major akua, or gods, in Hawaiian mythology.”

Deboer lists the major gods include Kanaloa, Kane, Ku and Lono, but is also keen to point out the show includes the goddesses Haumea, Kahaloapuna (the Rainbow Maiden), and, of course, Pele.

“This show is not meant to be all inclusive of every fact, meaning or ritual that may have been lost over the ages,” Deboer writes of the show.

“No piece of art can capture the past in its entirety.  I crafted this mythological interpretation with my own flair for the theatrical and unique perspective and search for spirituality in everyday life,” she continues.

“I am sensitive to the fact that being a non-Hawaiian genetically may put me at a disadvantage in some people’s minds to truly being able to present a piece of sacred art back to the host culture.  I have had an influx of  positive reactions from Kahunas, teachers, Hawaiian entertainers, tiki carvers, and various other local community members.”

Premiering in full on February 20th, at SOURCE – Interactive Arts Festival 2010 (February 19th – 22nd), The Birth of Tiki will surely wow. Want the wow-factor now? See some of the show sooner with a special sneak peek fundraiser on January 24th–appropriately held at Wow-Wee Maui’s Kava Bar & Grill.

To feature the evening’s fashion show of The Birth of Tiki’s 10-member, blacklight painted cast, the entire venue will be blacklight lit. Doug Deboer will provide his famed visual and slideshow expertise, and six artists will feature their work in a showcase, including a display by a master Maori carver.

You cannot invoke the spirit of the tiki (or what is evoked of it’s image), without hearing the tribal rhythms of the Pacific, as haunting and hollow as a distant conch. So, for this partiki, beats are definitely in order.

Who will be the four major spin gods? DJ Cudra Clover of the Exotica Hour, DJ Plush, DJ Toben, and DJ Joey the Wrench.

If you’ve ever played a goofy drinking game, you’ve already got a pretty good idea of the kind of fun that the Comedy Hui is after…25 improvisational games in quick succession, missing just the penalty shots for a screw-up. This show is tailored to the audience, which can suggest scenes, characters, and themes. ” I wouldn’t really recommend it for kids, I mean, it’s improvisation, so anything can happen,” says the producer, Amanda Taulere. She also mentions that she wants the audience to feel comfortable and like they can say anything.

1...2...3...IMPROV!

One game is called “Sit, Stand, Kneel, Lie Down,” and the point is that one cast member must be doing each action. If one person stands during the improv scene, as a result, the next one has to find an excuse to drop to the floor. Another game called “New Choice” is live, interactive mad libs. Remember how much fun those were? …Yesterday, my pyschologist told me to eat raw babies to battle obesity…(Everyone knows that psychologists are even crazier than the rest of us.) Mix things up and come play a few games with some of Maui’s funniest entertainers at Lahaina Cannery Mall, Friday, Jan 22cnd, at 9:00. $15.

“I WOULD LIKE, IF I MAY, TO TAKE YOU ON A STRANGE JOURNEY…” – The Criminologist, Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

Hmm… So that blog title/headline might be a little redundant. After all, the The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the epitome of audience participation. Tim Curry, at his finest (as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, for those of you new to Rocky Horror),  Susan Sarandon (as Janet… damn-it!), Barry Bostwick (as Brad), and even Meatloaf.

Fans of Rocky Horror know that dressing up is a lot of fun practically requisite, and know what to say / when to say it–all of whom will undoubtedly be there in full force (that said, it’s pertinent to mention the event is FREE, so fans aside, a free show always = a full house… get there early). Those ready to “give yourself over to absolute pleasure,” though it may be the month of scares, fear not–just show up ready for fun and you’ll catch on quick (and realize without a doubt that “you’ve arrived on a rather special night”). It is of particular importance to mention, thought, that the content (if you couldn’t tell) is quite provocative… so, this is strictly for the 18+ crowd and attendees will be required to show their IDs at the door.

For those old enough (and cool enough) to go, I’ll additionally inform you that the talented Rachel DeBoer will be doing themed body painting. Also, to happily reiterate, the whole shebang is FREE. So, “let’s do the time warp again” (and again, and again!) at this “late night double feature picture show”:  Iao Theater, October 2nd at 8:00 p.m.
